Another way to zoom and pan is to use the navigator panel
In the Menu Options click Window - Navigator
This shows you a small copy of your picture. Then with the slider on the panel you can zoom in and zoom out. You can zoom in the big picture and pan on the navigator panel using the red rectangle on the panel.
